In Trieste (Italy), from September 4 to October 29 2020, AiR Triestewill present the final exhibition of the artist-in-residence project organized with the support ofMiBACTand SIAE, under the “Per Chi Crea” programme, and in collaboration with Fondazione Modena Arti Visiveand NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti.
In the spaces of MLZ Art Dep, within the programme of the Science in the City FestivalbyESOF - EuroScience Open Forum 2020, the group show Neuro_Revolution, curated by Francesca Lazzarini, brings together Camilla Alberti, Marco Antelmi, Leonardo Bentini, Luca Marcelli, Orecchie D’Asinoand Valerio Veneruso.
The six visual artists under age 35, selected through an open call to investigate how the new technologies affected the human mind and behaviour, spent a one-month residency following workshops, tutorials, visits and meetings with curators, artists and experts in the field of technology, robotics and neuroscience. As a result of this intense experience in the European City of Science, the works on display cover a wide range of topics and explore the effects of technologies, both at a macro and individual level, providing points for reflection on the present as well as on the future.
In its earliest days, in the Seventies, the Internet brought about a utopia: that of a connected, anti-hierarchical and balanced world, where human beings would have no longer held a dominant position in their coexistence with the animal, vegetal species and with the machines. Featuring a series of embroideries and an organic sculpture, the WWW - Worlding Wild Webinstallation by Camilla Albertidraws a parallel between the structure of the IT network and the development processes of the mycorrhizae - the symbiotic associations between fungi and plant roots. By suggesting an alternative model for creating a network, taken from the biological world, WWWrecovers that dream by implying the possibility of overcoming the anthropocentrism that today dominates the practice of “building worlds”.
With Teorie di Topi, a short film overlapping between the documentary and the science fiction genre, Marco Antelmiraises some questions about the catastrophic consequences of the way we live in this present world. Clues of the reasons of the catastrophe seem to emerge from the memories of the protagonist, the last human still alive, who recollects three of his past interviews: to a lawyer expert in migrant rights and in pre-removal detention centres (CPR), to a designer of graphical user interfaces for the Internet banking, and to a data centre operator.
Leonardo Bentini, on the other hand, looks at the real, though intangible, world of the gig economy,by involving someon demandworkers in the process of collective writing. Based on the topics of identity and future of the community, the collective narrations of the interactive work titled The Intangible Community(www.theintangiblecommunity.com) have a hybrid and multiple nature, ranging from a social protest diary to science fiction, that reconnect a community otherwise dispersed and with no voice.
On the level of the subjectivation processes, the sound installation by Luca Marcelli is an answer to the semiotic chaos associated with the proliferation of info-stimuli in the bio-cognitive capitalism. By considering schizophrenia as a model of relationship between the subject and the world, LeVocireflects on the neuro-cognitive alterations caused by such condition as well as on the generative possibilities that may ensue.
The artist collective Orecchie D’Asinohas worked on the concepts of sociality and relationality: in the age of Facebook, Tinder, Happn and Instagram and, particularly, after the post-Coronavirus technological drift, do we still know how to meet vis-à-vis? To answer this question the artists have conceived Quattrocchi, a participatory art project that revives the meaning of meeting and of building a network in offline mode and examines key concepts of the contemporary world such as consumption, exchange, trust, fragility, value.
The installation Public void on pointer enterby Valerio Venerusofocuses on the instincts evoked and amplified by the use of social media. The enjoyment of the work, based on a Virtual Reality experience, revolves around the voyeurism, which is increasingly influencing the human behaviour online, as much as around the (im)possibility to access such contents and the ensuing frustration.
