Nessun dorma
Rudy Cremonini
Curated by Vincenzo Mazzarella and Davide Sarchioni
Reggia di Caserta
Sala della Fortuna, Sala dei Porti
From October 19 to November 26, 2018
From October 19 to November 26, 2018,the Royal Palace of Caserta(Reggia di Caserta) presents the exhibition “Nessun dorma” of Rudy Cremonini, curated by Vincenzo Mazzarella and Davide Sarchioni.
This solo show in both Sala della Fortuna and Sala dei Porti brings together ten recently-made large paintings, mostly unpublished and created for the occasion, soliciting a fascinating journey into the mysterious and poetic universe of the artist's painting.
The way the works are organized in the two rooms was conceived to inspire a relationship of interaction with the spaces and decorations of the Royal Palace of Caserta, in an almost cinematic dreamlike display, composed of seemingly unrelated frames and sequences.
The common thread is the reflection on what “daily life” in the Palace could possibly be like, and this becomes a metaphorical and interior space, where individual experience and the painter's most intimate visions are tied to a “domestic” vision of the Royal Apartments. Thus, a gigantic ornament, a sleeping woman or a zebra in the zoo are just some examples of this irrational display that leads us to an unusual interpretation of the place and ourselves within it.
“Nessun dorma” is an explicit reference to the famous aria of the opera “Turandot” by Giacomo Puccini and to Calaf's long wait until day break when he can free his love from death. It resoundsas an alert, a warning to everyone not to be overcome, especially in this contingent historical moment. The artist makes this exhortation to himself so that he will never lose the focus on his work that, implying a state of inner necessity, must take all the risk of knowing how to proceed in an unstable condition of equilibrium, in order not to fall for the easy flattery of virtuosities and the artifices of painting.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with La Di-Art, TerraMediaand Galerie Thomas Fuchsin Stuttgart, under the Matronato della Fondazione Donnareginaper le arti contemporanee and with Vetrya S.p.A.as Partner.
At the closing of the exhibition period, a monograph on the work by Rudy Cremonini will be published, and this will also document the artist project for the Royal Palace of Caserta. The volume, edited by Davide Sarchioni, will be published and distributed by Gli Oriwith texts in both Italian and English by Caroline Berner Kühl, Vincenzo Mazzarella and Davide Sarchioni, withan exhaustive number of photographs.
