In Turin, from 23 January to 12 March 2020, Luce Gallerypresents the solo show “Life is Elsewhere” of the emerging African-American artist Dominic Chambers.
Drawing on personal past and inspired by stories, mythologies and African-American history, Chambers investigates issues related to black identity. Reflecting on social stigma through the artistic practice, he renegotiates the relationship with his cultural heritage, family and masculinity.
In the large-scale paintings, he challenges the historical and contemporary associations attributed to the black body, in particular to the African-American male, portraying him in moments of meditation and contemplation within invented scenarios.
Furthermore, Chambers questions about the psychological and literal interpretations of the concept of “the Veil” expressed by William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) in “The Souls of Black Folk”(1903). According to the intellectual and sociologist, African-Americans live behind a veil that, like an invisible barrier, separates them from white people imposing a double consciousness. This colour line generates two different identities, for which the black man has a double vision, that obliges to look at yourself even through the eyes of whites perceiving their discrimination and prejudices.
Dominic Chambers(1993, Saint Louis, Missouri) lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut. He received the MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2019. He has participated in residencies, among others, the Yale Norfolk Summer Residency and the New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn. His upcoming exhibitions include the solo show at August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh in 2020.
